3 ways to help the environment when you’re on holiday

When you visit Waveney River Centre, it’s simply impossible to ignore the beauty of our natural environment. Plants, animals and people live in harmony, with concrete towers replaced by tents and cosy lodges.

Our visitors are ordinary people from all over the UK and beyond, learning an ever-increasing amount about the damage that’s done to the environment.

We know that our guests want to enjoy a wonderfully relaxing holiday or short break, for activities like fishing, kayaking and birdwatching in Norfolk, but that many also want to use this time to do a little better by the planet. Here are three ways that you can help the environment when you’re enjoying your UK holidays:

1. Switch to shampoo bars

Travellers are often faced with this hair-washing dilemma: should you take an over-priced shampoo travel bottle to save space, or pay a more reasonable amount of money for a full-sized bottle that you’ll have to fit into your suitcase?

Shampoo bars solve this problem, as well as being better for the planet. A shampoo bar takes up a relatively small amount of room – certainly no bigger than a travel-sized bottle of shampoo – and comes free from all of the plastic packaging that can end up in our lakes and rivers. What’s not to love?

2. Bring your own gloves, and get to work

While we don’t want our guests to maintain our site, or feel like they’re being put to work, we’re aware that an increasing number of people are becoming voluntary part-time litter pickers.

Campers, in particular, have started bringing a bin bag and a pair of gloves whenever they’re staying overnight. Wherever they stay, they aim to fill and take home an entire bag full of litter or rubbish that they’ve found throughout their local surroundings. It’s a fantastic way to make sure that your holiday does something good for the environment.

If you’re not keen on the idea of picking up someone else’s litter, simply do your bit to take your own rubbish away.

3. Use your feet

There are so many wonderful things to do in and around our Waveney River Centre. Explore on foot, leave the car parked up, and enjoy a slower pace of life when you’re on holiday.
